PORTUGAL: The Film Society’s Day, April 14th

The Film Society’s Day is celebrated for the first time on April 14th, 2019. It is an initiative promoted by the Portuguese Federation of Film Societies and intends to be a moment of celebration of the film societies activity and remember its historical, social, educational and cultural contribution.

In this first edition of the “Film Society’s Day” is intended to promote a party all over the country, from north to south, passing through the Azores. The celebrations will take place from 12th to 18th April in several film societies where the dialogue will be promoted around the cinema and the film society activity. In addition to film screening, this party also features talks, debates and movie concerts.

The choice of this day has the double aim of celebrating the creation of the world’s first film club, which appeared in Paris on April 14th, 1907, and at the same time celebrate the appearance of the longest running film society in Portugal – on the 13th of April of 1945 was born the “Portuguese Club of Cinematography” that later added the suffix “Oporto Film Society”.

The celebrations of this event can be seen on the website of the Portuguese Federation of Film Societies(www.fpcc.pt) where is an updated agenda of all the events organized in the film societies that have joined the festivities.

Still framed in the festivities of the Film Society’s Day, the films nominated for the Prize António Loja Neves will be announced on April 14th. This initiative of the FPCC intends simultaneously to honor the cinematographer António Loja Neves and the cinema of the Portuguese Speaking African Countries.
