27th L’Alternativa Independent Film Festival -2020

Don Quixote Award for International Feature Film

From 16 to 29 November 2020- Barcelona

First of all, I would like to thank the Catalan Federation of Film Societies for choosing

me to represent the FICC –IFFS on the jury of this Alternative Film Fest Awards.

I would also like to thank the treatment received by the Festival’s organization,

especially the jury coordinator Pere Sastre, and the directors Cristina Riera and Tess

Renaudo.

For me, it has been a new and very enriching experience, which has allowed me to see

from within a Festival with a long history and an international reach. In this year of the

pandemic, the initial forecasts were to do a half-face-to-face and half-online festival

but in the end the face-to-face part was cancelled and only online activities were done;

even the awards ceremony was done online on YouTube.

Only the closing documentary EPICENTRO by the Austrian director Hubert Sauper was

screened at the Maldà cinemas in Barcelona, a session to which I was invited by the

organization and which I was able to attend.

The jury was made up of 3 people: Shantosh Pathare from India, Dakota Hons Gigg

from New Zealand and myself. I leave some data and links at the end.

Pere Sastre coordinated the online meetings, which were several, first to make the

presentations of the different members and establish a minimum scheme of

operation. At another meeting, we were also greeted by festival directors Cristina and

Tess. We did a whatsapp group to facilitate contact outside of video conferencing

meetings. And finally we made another discussion session where each member

presented a prioritized list of films 3-4 after making the viewing of 10 films in section

Feature Film International, which included both documentary and fiction films.

We rated the films selected for the festival very positively, which we found to be of

great quality, with a great diversity of chosen themes, and from different parts of the

world. Topics that are very current and many of them little known or directly

unknown.

Understanding was fairly easy, as 2 members prioritized “The Year of Discovery” first.

And as a special mention, we agreed on “A Febre”, valuing its qualities as well as being

a fiction film set in South America.

The jury of the Don Quixote International Feature Film Prize l’Alternativa Official

27th edition, formed by Dakota Hone Gibbs, Salvador Matas Borrut and Santosh

Pathare, meeting on November 25, 2020, has unanimously agreed to award the Prize

Don Quixote of International Feature Film in The Year of Discovery, by Luis López

The Year of discovery [Original title :- EL Año Del Descubrimiento ]

[Spain/ 2020/ Dir: Luis Lopez Carrasco ]

The documentary film The Year of discovery directed by Luis Lopez Carrasco explores

the past through the present, and vice versa, and uses the words of the people in the

film to try and understand where and when the precarious lives lived by so Spaniards

today first emerged; it tells of universal truths based on all-too-often-forgotten local

facts.

The Fever [Original title :- A febre] [ Brazil,France,Germany/ 2019/ Dir :Maya Da-Rin]

Eschewing any paternalism or stereotypes, this film offers us an insight into the

current living conditions of the indigenous people of the Amazon and how they face up

to contradictions in their life, family and culture.

INFORME FINAL

27th L’Alternativa Independent Film Festival -2020

Premi Don Quixot de Llargmetratge Internacional

Del 16 al 29 de novembre 2020- Barcelona

Voldria en primer lloc agrair a la Federació Catalana de Cine-Clubs per

haver-me escollit per representar a la FICC dins del jurat d’aquest Premi de l’Alternativa Film Fest.

Així mateix agrair el tracte rebut de l’organització del Festival, en especial

al coordinador de jurats Pere Sastre, i a les directores Cristina Riera i Tess

Renaudo.

Per mi ha estat una experiència nova i molt enriquidora, que m’ha permès

veure des de dins un Festival de llarga trajectòria i amb un abast

internacional. En aquest any de la pandèmia, les previsions inicials eren de

fer un festival meitat presencial i meitat on-line però finalment es va anular la part presencial i només es van fer activitats on-line; fins i tot el lliurament dels premis es va fer on-line a Youtube.

Només el documental de cloenda EPICENTRO del director austríac Hubert

Sauper es va projectar als cinemes Maldà de Barcelona, sessió a la qual vaig ser invitat per l’organització i a la qual vaig poder assistir.

El jurat el formàvem 3 persones: Shantosh Pathare de l’Índia, Dakota Hons

Gigg de Nova Zelanda i jo mateix. Deixo algunes dades i enllaços al final per si són d’interès.

Pere Sastre va coordinar les trobades on-line, que van ser diverses, primer

per a fer les presentacions dels diferents membres i establir un mínim

esquema de funcionament. En una altra reunió, ens van saludar també les

directores del festival Cristina i Tess. Vam fer una grup de whatsapp per a

facilitar el contacte fora de les trobades de videoconferència. I finalment

vam fer la deliberació en una altra sessió on cada membre va presentar una llista prioritzada de 3-4 films després de fer el visionat dels 10 films de

l’apartat de Llargmetratges Internacionals, que comprenien tant

documentals com films de ficció.

Vam valorar molt positivament els films seleccionats pel festival, que vam

trobar d’una gran qualitat, amb una gran diversitat de temàtiques

escollides, i de diverses zones del món. Temes de gran actualitat i moltes

d’elles poc conegudes o directament desconegudes.

L’entesa va ser bastant fàcil, donat que 2 membres vam prioritzar “El año

del descubrimiento” en primer lloc. I com a menció especial vam posar-nos d’acord en “A Fevre”, en valorar les seves qualitats a més de ser un film de ficció i situat a l’Amèrica del Sud.

Transcrivim l’acta de la deliberació del jurat:

El jurat del Premi Don Quixot de la 27a edició de l’Alternativa, Festival de

Cinema Independent de Barcelona, format per Dakota Hone Gibbs, Salvador

Matas Borrut i Santosh Pathare, reunit el 25 de novembre de 2020, ha

acordat per unanimitat concedir el Premi Don Quixot de Llargmetratge

Internacional a El año del descubrimiento, de Luis López

Carrasco (Espanya, Suïssa).

Un film que explora el passat a través del present i viceversa, i que fa servir

les paraules dels mateixos protagonistes per mirar d’entendre on i quan es va

originar la precarietat amb què viuen bona part dels espanyols. Ens parla

d’allò universal a partir de fets locals que de vegades ja hem oblidat.

El jurat també ha decidit concedir una menció especial a A Febre, de Maya

Da-Rin (Brasil, França, Alemanya).

Evitant el paternalisme i els estereotips, aquesta pel·lícula ens apropa a les

condicions actuals de vida de les poblacions indígenes de l’Amazonia, i ens

mostra com afronten les contradiccions de la seva vida, el seu entorn familiar

i la seva cultura.
