FICC Jury Report: 25 L’Alternativa Festival de Cinema Independent, Barcelona 2018

This 2018, L’Alternativa Festival de Cinema Independant de Barcelona, is 25 years old and, to celebrate it, the program has been fantastic! Both the Official Section of featured films and that of short films, as well as the other screenings, have had high quality in cinematographical, documentary, experimental or social terms. As always, the festival was held at the CCCB center in Barcelona, a curious place in its build but with enough room for big screen projections and hosting hundreds of people. Moreover, this edition concurred with an exhibition of the center on the director Stanley Kubrick.

It has been a very intense week for the FICC jury, composed by Øyvind Hellenes (Norway), Madhurima Baruah (India) and myself,  Eva Campos (Spain). Øyvind is the founder and president of the Sunnfjord Filmklubb from Førde, a film society created less than one year ago; and Madhurima is the secretary of the Gauhati Cine Club from Assam, which has an associated film festival. Taking care of us, we had Pere and Kita, two young volunteers committed to the festival and with a lot of energy.

On Monday 12th November, we met each other for the first time and we had our first contact with the festival. From the 13th to the 16th, we worked on watching all the featured films of the official section. We tried to watch as many films as possible on the big screen (they are enjoyed better). The same 16th we deliberated.

We decided quickly and unanimously that the Don Quixote Prize for Best Feature Film was for AMÉRICA, of Erick Stoll and Chase Whiteside (USA). We all found it was a very touching documentary film. It showed us the generational relationship in a warm and sweet way, giving us a positive feeling despite the unlucky situation of the characters. We saw the unique connection of three brothers and the endless love for their grandmother, leaving the audience with moist eyes.

We didn’t award any mention because we couldn’t agree on which was the second best film.

On the 17th, the Award Ceremony took place in the same CCCB center, at the Main Hall. Unfortunately, the directors couldn’t stay and had to go to Amsterdam to present their film, but they left us a very nice video thanking us. After the event, we had a party with a DJ that did video musical screening and encouraged us to dance with his style!

With all this, even if on Sunday 18th there were still screenings, we said goodbye and we wished each other a good continuation, hoping to meet again.
